Analyst Job Opportunities in Fantasy Sports

Analyst Job Opportunities in Fantasy SportsAnalyst Job Opportunities in Fantasy SportsThe explosion in fantasy sports participation has added various sports career opportunities. Fantasy sports allow fans to compete with one another based on the outcome of actual sporting events. Typically fans join a league in which they draft players from sports like baseball or football. The success of their team is based on the success of the players on their fantasy roster in the actual sporting events. Fantasy football leagues use National Football League players. Baseball leagues use players in the major leagues. There also are fantasy leagues in hockey, basketball, and individual sports like auto racing and golf. Every sport either has a fantasy version for its fans, or someone is working on it. The good news sports career individuals are this explosion has created job opportunities. Jobs in Fantasy Sports Typically fantasy sports jobs involve starting an Internet site or working for an I nternet site that offers fantasy sports. Some of the fantasy sports leaders include ESPN.com, CBSSports.com, SportingNews.com, and Rotoworld.com, just to name a few. Also, many of the various professional sports sites, like NFL.com, offer fantasy information and leagues. Many of these sites offer leagues free services that include compiling stats and keeping track of standings. These sites also typically offer mora extensive statistical services to leagues that pay an annual fee. Jobs needed by these sites include writers, editors, programmers, and website designers. Because fantasy players want the latest news on specific players and trends, the sites typically employ writers who are experts in one or more fantasy sports. These writers will offer draft tips before the season, keep players updated on roster moves and potential changes in the real-life versions of the sports, and offer advice for succeeding on the fantasy side. Site editors will check for accuracy of the statistical information that arrives each day, fact-check articles, write site headlines, and select pictures for the site. Programmers and site designers will develop ideas to efficiently load the needed statistical information into a site in an attractive manner. Fantasy sites have come a long way in recent years, typically offering real-time scoring, scoring tailored to each league, and a variety of scheduling and team options. How to Approach a Former Employer for a New Job

How to Approach a Former Employer for a New JobHow to Approach a Former Employer for a New JobEspecially in a tight job market, many companies will welcome back former employees who left under good terms. They say you cant go home again - or can you? Experts say you should definitely consider former employers when seeking the next rung on the career ladder, but a diplomatic approach and sturdy, unburned bridges are must.In a tight job market, the decision to return to a former employer should be parte of a comprehensive job-search strategy, said Roy Cohen, author of The Wall Street Professionals Survival Guide and a career coach. Unless you left for reasons involving criminal activity or sub-par performance, and your employment file indicates that under no uncertain terms could you ever be re-hired, then the decision is yours.Deborah Millhouse agreed, especially if you are looking to return to a company but not necessarily a similar position. You absolutely should consider all options when looking for a new job, said Millhouse, president of CEO Inc., a full-service recruiting and human capital firm. If your former employer has an opportunity to help you hit your career goals and objectives, you should consider returning to the company, especially if you can come back at a different level in a different division, department or functional area. There are also many benefits to the employer Among other advantages, a returning employee is a known quantity, which may reduce startup time as well as on-boarding and training costs. From the perspective of an employer, we are a business that has hired back a few former employees that have worked out quite well, said Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation, a company that helps organizations incorporate. We made sure to provide extensive clarity and detail with regard to the position and expectations, but we found the talk prior to re-hiring to be a very successful approach. The former employees already know the business, so t raining is minimal, and therefore the hiring process becomes more efficient than hiring a brand-new employee.Sweeney added that one condition for rehiring is that the person must have a renewed interest or passion in the business.A fresh tank of gasIndeed, your desire to explore a new position with an old employer should be expressed carefully. You dont want to look like you have come crawling back or are settling in any way. Experts agree that job seekers should be prepared to state clear reasons for wanting to return as well as demonstrate the growth they have undergone while away.If you resigned to advance your career or to make more money, youll need a good reason to explain your decision to return, said Cohen. Bear in mind that former bosses and companies tend to see us as they always have, so part of your story should focus on expanded skills and valuable experience gained while away. So, how do you make a smooth re-entry?For one thing, dont just answer an ad without any additi onal networking or even schmoozing. You will need to reconnect with former co-workers and bosses to let them know that you are interested in coming back, said Cheryl Palmer, a certified career coach. Its a good idea to start by putting out feelers to see if there are any positions that are open that you would be qualified for. You can take a former co-worker out to lunch to re-establish the relationship, or set up a networking meeting with a former boss to see how open the company would be to you returning. In addition, you can join any alumni groups that the company has on LinkedIn to reconnect with people in the organization. But, adds Cohen, dont expect to be able to slack off during the hiring process because you have some insider knowledge Just because you already worked for the company doesnt mean that you should be any less prepared for your interviews. Inside information and key relationships are great, but you will still need to demonstrate relevance.Prepare for changesIf you decide to accept an offer from a former employer, expect the unexpected. While the core company culture has not likely changed dramatically, there are sure to be new people, new processes and new politics in place.Even if you are returning to a company where you previously worked, its not going to be the same experience, and thats something that candidates should be aware of, said Marina Gapeenkova, a certified human-resources professional. They are going to be working with different people with a different manager possibly in a very different position, capacity or department. So, it is going to be very much like a totally new job, save for the name of the company. This may cause initial dissonance upon starting with the company again and can create some tension. To minimize the impact of such dissonance, the best thing is to approach the new job at the old company with a very open mind.Of course, all of this lends credence to that old adage Dont burn your bridges. Job hunting at a company you worked for in the past wont be fruitful if you settled scores on your way out the door instead of resigning with gracious goodbyes (even if they were through gritted teeth).Baggage from the last time around can make things tough, said Cheryl Heisler, president of Lawternatives, a career consultancy for lawyers. Whatever reasons prompted you to leave the company need to have been resolved before you can even think about going back.

Are you being paranoid about being left out of the loop at work

Are you being paranoid about being left out of the loop at work Are you being paranoid about being left out of the loop at work Everyone has bouts of paranoia over their job from time to time. Whether there’s genuine cause for concern or not - an impending merger or layoffs, for example - that feeling can creep over you for any number of reasons.Perhaps you just started a new job after a sudden restructuring at your old job, and as a result, you’re constantly on your guard. Or maybe you have an uneasy relationship with one of your bosses, and you feel like no matter what you do, they’re out to get you.If you’re prone to anxiety, this paranoia may be hard to shake - especially if it’s proved well-founded in the past. What’s worse is that, apart from how these feelings affect you psychologically, they do have an impact on your performance. Studies at Harvard University have shown that anxious thoughts can have a negative impact on your productivity - which could lead to you actually losing your job.So how can you check your paranoia at the door? We spoke to a few experts who had some good tips.D r. Lyssa Menard, business coach, psychologist, and assistant professor at Northwestern University, regularly works with clients who experience work paranoia. She examines their thoughts and feelings, and helps them distill the reality of a situation from their emotional distortion of it.If a client says,”my boss hated my report. I’m definitely getting fired,” that’s an example of extreme or catastrophic thinking, in which the mind leaps to the worst-case scenario as the only possible outcome. An easy way to clear away the irrationality is to step back and get perspective: even if your report wasn’t a work of genius, one sub-par report rarely leads to firing.Another common paranoia trigger is being excluded from things like meetings and important emails, which can cause friction between team members and, at the extreme, office meltdowns. Why is being left out of the loop such a trigger for our worst behavior? Exclusion from important discussions can make people, especially pe rfectionists, feel unimportant, or worse, inept. “They expect others to judge them as harshly as they judge themselves, yet they’re almost always wrong,” says Dr. Menard.Another cause of paranoia is work burn out, which prevents you from thinking clearly. Harvard-trained psychotherapist and career coach Katherine Crowley says this can come out of simply not sleeping enough, or feeling stretched thin by other life stresses. If this is the case, she suggests taking time to care for yourself physically first, and if the feelings are still there, talk to a confidant at work (or a career coach) to ease your concerns and figure out if you should investigate further. If after parsing the facts you still have concerns, you may want to bring them up with your superior. Dawn Roberts, a consultant on business efficiency says,  â€œIf you are consistently delivering high value to the business, you should not fear bringing occasional unsettling scenarios to your boss at work […] However,  you must discern what you should bring to your boss wisely, depending on the boss and the situation.”Sometimes, you just have to let it go. Or as Dr. Menard puts it, “basically, if you have concerns that are in the realm of possibility, but can’t ascertain the reality, it’s then important to learn to live with that uncertainty.”Of course, that’s much easier said than done, but if you consistently do good work and add value to the company, there’s often not much more you can do. For example, layoffs can happen for any number of reasons, few of which are directly related to your individual performance. If you’re frustrated by that lack of control, or it happens frequently, address the core issue of your fear of instability and job loss by being prepared. Create a back-up plan so you’re prepared just in case. Get your portfolio together, and keep an eye on the job market. If you’re secure in your position, but still feeling frustrated - say you’ve been passed ove r for promotion several timesâ€" Dr. Menard also suggests jumping into job search mode. This is an actionable way to feel more in control and realize you have options, many of which you may have never even considered. And if you get offers, whether or not you accept th

Exploring the Problem of Police Suicides

Exploring the Problem of Police Suicides Exploring the Problem of Police Suicides Any time a police officer loses their life in the line of duty it is a cause for mourning. Law enforcement officers around the world will tell you there are few events sadder than a fallen fellow officers funeral. And while much is made of law enforcement line of duty deaths, there are other dangers lurking for officers that are just as sinister- although far less talked about. Chief among those dangers is law enforcement suicides. Myths About Police Suicides There are many assumptions made about the day-to-day life of a police officer and what it does to a persons psyche. With those assumptions comes the belief that police suicide is a rampant problem. But inflated suicide rates are not the only myths and assumptions made about self-inflected officer deaths. Others include the unsubstantiated belief that police divorce is more prevelant, or the idea that alcohol and drug abuse occur more frequently among officers. Most of these beliefs are false, and in the least, unsubstantiated. Instead, theyre based on perceptions, stereotypes and misunderstandings of the profession. This may include the idea that police departments under report police suicides in an attempt to cover them up. Suicide Rate for Police Officers This is not to say that the number of suicides by police officers is not concerning. In fact, a study by the nonprofit Blue H.E.L.P. puts police suicides at more than 160 for 2018- having rose for the third straight year. Thats nearly triple the rate of officers killed in the line of duty, per a 2018 Ruderman Family Foundation study. The rate of police suicides is significant when you compare it to the line of duty deaths. So significant, in fact, that police suicide has been labeled the other line of duty death. Are Police Suicides More Prevalent? While studies put the suicide rate for police officers at around 23 per 100,000 officers, the rate of the general population is estimated at 14 suicides per 100,000 people, based on Centers for Disease Control figures.   Law enforcement officers, then, can be said to be over 1.5 times more likely to commit suicide than the general population. By comparison, military member suicides are roughly 30 per 100,000 members. Reasons for Law Enforcement Suicides There is a lot of speculation as to why law enforcement officer suicides are higher than others, including those weve already discussed- alcoholism, depression and divorce. In truth, those issues may only be symptoms of a bigger problem: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The truth is, an average law enforcement career is well-suited to produce PTSD for some officers. Between the long hours, the fatigue, the potential health issues and trauma, it is easy to understand how PTSD may contribute to higher suicide rates among officers. Figures from the Ruderman Family Foundation has found that roughly 35% of police officers experience PTSD, compared to 6.8% for the general population. As well, roughly 12% of officers experience depression, versus 6.8% for the general population. Preventing Police Officer Suicides No one can fully understand why an individual might choose to take their own life. But experts recommend implementation of mental and physical wellness programs, employee assistance services and peer support systems.

How Measuring Your Time by the Hour is Blocking You from being Happy

How Measuring Your Time by the Hour is Blocking You from being Happy How Measuring Your Time by the Hour is Blocking You from being Happy There are many symptoms that become apparent as the “time is money” philosophy runs amok. While using terms such as “overbooked” to describe yourself in order to avoid additional responsibility, it is more typically a result of an emotional state more so than an actuality. Not having the time for personal enjoyment in the name of being overbooked is a strong indicator that your priorities are skewed and that it may be time to rethink the ordering of your life. If you always consider work as your number one priority, consider the value of the other parts of your life â€" friends, family, hobbies â€" and how they should compare to the work you do. Learn to say “no” in some circumstances and prioritize your time to focus on what’s truly important, such as your physical and emotional well-being and that of your loved ones. Envisioning time as money can develop into an overriding perception of the need for perfection; every moment must be perfect in order to generate as much money as possible. Seeking this perfection leads to an inevitable fear of failure which in turn leads to less productivity and hiring levels of stress. Psychologist Debra Condren promotes the use of the mantra “good enough.” When a project is good enough, let it go. The more free space you open up in your schedule and in your mind, the more capable you become of taking on new challenges and improving your outlook. As much as time-is-money disciples espouse the ideals of efficiency and extraordinary productivity, most of the time it is found that we are actually putting in hours just to look like we are working; so-called “face time.” Examine what you do while you’re “working.” How much time is spent surfing the web, making personal calls, running errands, and other non work-related activities? Simply looking like you are working does not equate to real productivity. Workaholics and pseudo-perfectionists should spend more time improving efficiency so work time is more productive while leaving enough time to have a personal life. The loss of the ability to relax and enjoy life almost invariably leads burn out. Irritability, headaches, constant dread, anti-social behavior, lack of motivation, and physical and mental exhaustion are all signs of burn out. Job burnout is a direct effect of slaving under a perfectionist mindset. Scheduling free time, much like you would schedule a meeting or other social engagements, should be a top priority.

You will be shocked by which generation is the worst with money

You will be shocked by which generation is the worst with money You will be shocked by which generation is the worst with money According to a new Bankrate study, 78% of Americans suffer from stress-induced insomnia, which is a 9% increase since the last time Bankrate conducted a sleep survey back in 2018. In both reports, financial issues proved to be one of the principal concerns keeping people tossing and turning at night. Do I have enough money saved for retirement? What am I going to do about my credit card debt? What am I going to do about my student loans? Rent? Mortgage? And the list spirals on and on. Generation X was found to be the most vexed by their money issues, which ostensibly defies conventional wisdom, but this actually makes perfect sense.  It’s in vogue to saddle Millennials with the ‘Woe is me? I’m an incompetent that can’t stop blowing my money on coffee and heelies’ persona, though the popularity of this viewpoint is due to conflation, I think. It’s true, a larger portion of Millennials are narcissistic, and they  carry the brunt of student loan debt, however, it’s also tr ue that Millennials are a lot more prudent than previous generations when it concerns their finances.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Dispelling the generalizations  One in three Millennials upped their retirement savings last year, which is the highest of any generation. A modest 26% of Gen Xers did the same, followed by 20% of baby boomers. Of course, no generation is perfectly sagacious about retirement savings. The canonized rule of thumb suggests you start saving 10% of your income by the time you reach your twenties-most people aren’t making that cut. In fact, 25% of Americans adults aren’t saving anything at all for their golden years.   Surveys dating all the way back to 2015 have singled out Generation X has the least likely to gain financial security in addition to being the most likely to experience stress over it.  â€œDevising a plan and starting to execute against it â€" piece by piece â€" is the best way to get things done,” explains Bankrate industry analyst Ted Rossman. “Simply getting started should help you begin to feel better and settle your racing mind. That holds true whether you’re worried about health, money, relationships, work or anything else.”  Financial optimism is a bit of an uphill battle for Xers, the generation sandwiched between two famously wallet draining responsibilities: taking care of their children and their aging parents. These two obligations make fiscal flexibility nearly impossible. A recent TD Ameritrade’s Financial Support Survey., reports that 39% of the Generation X community feel that they will never have as secure a financial life as their parents’ generation.” Conversely, Millennials and Gen Zers came up in a time wherein taking action is culturally encouraged, irrespective of gender, race, sexual orientation, etc.A recent Bank of America study revealed that millennials are also more proactive when it comes to asking for higher wages.   Forty-seven percent of millennials demanded raises in 2017, compared to 39% of baby boomers and 36% of Gen Xers who reported doing so.  Eight in ten Generation X members are in some form of debt, specifically credit card debt.   Gen Xers have the highest credit debt of any other generation. Value Penguin reports, “Millennials and individuals over 74 years old held the least credit card debt. These two groups are also among the least likely to have a credit card, which can serve as a potential explanation behind the trend we are seeing here,”Bankrate’s latest survey highlighted credit card debt as the financial woes that everyone is the most pessimistic about-in fact more than half of the sample studied occasioned this.

The ABCs of an Effective Cover Letter

The ABCs of an Effective Cover Letter The ABCs of an Effective Cover Letter Cover letters are the bane of existence for many job seekers (as the tweets below attest). It’s unclear if anyone reads them or what employers even expect from them, and the rules are always changing. I hate writing CVs and cover letters ?? I am great, just hire me ?? - Ashley Clarke (@clarkeash) May 26, 2014 I hate writing cover letters #desperateforajob #someonehiremeplz - Christina Malibiran (@ChrissyMalibu) May 23, 2014 Seriously the worst part about job hunting is writing cover letters. I hate writing cover letters - Bridget Brady (@purrtygurl717) May 21, 2014 I hate putting so much time into cover letters, assessments, posting job history EVEN THO my resume is attached, for jobs tht dnt even call - Pooh (@_love_pooh__) May 20, 2014 Used properly, cover letters can be a huge asset to your job search, but they do take time and effort to create. If you’re wondering if it’s worth it to write cover letters, start by asking yourself these questions. Be honest. The answer to some or even all of them might be “no.” Do the companies I’m applying to explicitly require a cover letter? Are there things about my work experience, accomplishments or personality that would be helpful to explain to hiring managers? Are there things I want hiring managers to know that aren’t on my resume or would be awkward to put on my resume? Am I willing to put in the time and effort to write a good cover letter? If you’re still reading, it’s likely that you answered “yes,” or at least “maybe,” to one of the questions. Before you dive into writing your cover letter, here are some things to think about. The Truth About Cover Letters 1. Your cover letter can mean the difference between getting an interview and getting ignored. For example, imagine that you really want to work as a recruiter, but you only have  sales jobs experience  on your resume. By using a cover letter you can explain that many of the skills you use as a salesperson (such as cold-calling prospects, understanding client needs, making a case for the benefit of your product) can easily be translated into a  recruiting job, which requires calling potential candidates, understanding candidate fit and promoting your company culture to top talent. Without a cover letter, a hiring manager may immediately decide that your skills are not a fit because you don’t explicitly have recruiting experience. 2. Your cover letter can potentially hurt your chances more than it helps them. A poorly written cover letter that’s filled with grammatical mistakes signals to employers that you lack attention to detail. The rationale is that if you put so little effort into your cover letter, then how much attention are you likely to pay to your job? If you decide to take the time to write a cover letter, make sure it’s a good one. 3. There are no universal opinions about cover letters. The truth is that there are very few absolutes regarding cover letters. Some hiring managers love them, and some  don’t read them. Some recruiters expect them as a formality, and sometimes resumes are passed around internally and get separated from their cover letter entirely. For this reason you should consider two rules of thumb as you think about whether a cover letter is right for you. Rule #1:  First, do no harm. If you have nothing to say, and you aren’t willing to take the time to write, proofread and spellcheck a cover letter, then don’t write a cover letter at all. Rule #2:  If the application instructions say that a cover letter is required, then include a cover letter no matter what. Make sure to spellcheck it. Now that you’ve decided that you must incorporate a cover letter into your  job search  strategy, take a look at these real-life samples. If you were to grade your current cover letter according to these standards, what grade would your letter receive? Grade D I had talked a gentleman at the [Name of school] job fair on [Date]. He mentioned that I should apply for this position.                                                                                           This cover letter is worse than no cover letter. It actively works against the candidate. The “letter” is only two sentences, and it is missing a word. The letter says nothing about why the candidate is interested in the position or what skills might make this person good at the job. What we learned about this candidate based on this letter is that the candidate couldn’t be bothered to proofread the letter and seemed to be applying solely at a stranger’s urging. Unfortunately these are not the key qualities that most employers look for in a new employee. Grade C This letter is to express my interest in the job posting listed on your website. Based on my skills and interests, I believe that I would be a valued addition to your team. I believe there is a good fit between my skills set and requirements to this position…                                                           This letter is an average, obligatory letter. It may not ruin the candidate’s chance of receiving an interview, but it doesn’t enhance the candidate and is likely to be ignored. Grade B I was pleased to learn of your need for a [job title]. With solid [Field A] knowledge, extensive [Field B] working experience and excellent interpersonal communication skill, I am writing to apply for this position. Through my studies as a [major] at [University], I have the opportunity to learn A, B, and C and to complement my theoretical research knowledge with hand-on training at [Company M]. This letter is a good start for a recent graduate. It is personalized to the  advertised job  and tries to tie together school knowledge with the job duties. Some cleanup is needed to fix the typos, but this is a start to a potentially successful letter. Grade A I am writing to apply for the [job title] at [Company]. This summer I graduate with a [degree] in [major] and am eager to continue improving my [X] and [Y] skills in a company environment. I believe that my previous experience with [X] and [Y] make me an effective candidate for this internship. I am particularly drawn to this internship because my knowledge, skills and qualifications closely match those described in the job description. Please consider the following: Example 1 Example 2 Example 3 While it may seem unusual for a graduate student to apply for a position such as this, I want you to know that I am interested in this internship because I want a career where I get to [do activities 1, 2, and 3]. I want to explore how [activity 4] can improve [critical function] for a company. As a result, I am willing, and am able, to relocate to [location] (of my own accord) for this internship.   This letter is great. It serves the purpose of providing more information about the candidate that a traditional resume can’t. The beginning of the letter clearly tells us the status of the candidate, why the candidate is interested in the job and why she is qualified. This job seeker then provides several examples to support her claim that she is qualified for the position. She closes the letter by answering some potential objections or questions that a hiring manager might have, such as the perception that she might be overqualified or that she would expect relocation assistance. The required language and tone of a successful cover letter will vary by industry and culture, but the basics of this letter are sound. As you create your cover letter, use these samples as a guide of what (and what not) to do to vie for a spot on the interview schedule.

Making a Self-Replicating 3D Printer

Making a Self-Replicating 3D Printer Making a Self-Replicating 3D Printer Youd think Seinfelds Kramer came up with this one. From the maker of a coffee table book about coffee tables comes a 3D printer made with the help of a 3D printer. Ok, Cosmo wasnt involved but it does seem like the kind of notion that might spring from the writers of that hit show. And the creator of one of these printers, the Snappy Rep-Rap 3D Printer, didnt mention anything about ever having an obsession with Kenny Rogers Roasters either. Garth Minette mainly works as a professional web developer but hobbywise hes long cast a wide net. I like trying so many things. I picked up a CNC mill maybe 10 years ago and looked at that and thought how cool it was for playing around and making stuff, says the Snappy Rep-Rap 3D Printer creator. My roommate and I figured it would be interesting for doing other things with wood and metal. I made a number of 3D printers over time. But I didnt think Id end up doing this. There were a number of difficulties in creating the printer, a creation he says is more than half made from a 3D printer. The most difficult challenge has been that these printers work by extruding plastic through a hot nozzle but if you try to print a nozzle, its going to melt because the same material that youre using for the printer is what youre squeezing through it, says Minette, who resides in San Jose, CA. Parts printed on the Snappy printer. Image: Snappy Rep-Rap Minette thinks in the future, people might be able to do it with a binary compound resin they squeeze through it to dissipate the heat. With these printers, there has also been a generational loss. Each generation of the parts probably wont be quite as good as the generation before, he adds. Also, if you replace the rails with smooth metal rails instead of having the printed plastic parts I have to assemble, it would remove several of the inaccuracies from my current printer. The maker has made about five different generations of his printer thus far and laughs when asked to describe the printers appearance. A bright fluorescent-looking thing with two towers and a bridge across the middle, he says. For the first printer made, I had to design the parts first, assemble them, figure out what wasnt working, and then reassemble. I worked for months on it. Its designed to be snapped together and his goal was to have as few parts as possible. According to Minette, now it takes a little more than a week to design the parts and two and a half hours to assemble the 3D printer with the parts. Beginning to end, including the price of filament, he estimates the cost of the latest iteration to be slightly less than $300. But the price of putting it together in anxiety is hard to measure. Its fun but also stressful because you end up designing a part and tweaking it and it takes hours to print the part to find out if it even worked or not, says Minette. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Learn more about the latest in 3D printing at ASMEsAM3D Conference Expo. For Further Discussion I made a number of 3D printers over time. But I didn’t think I’d end up doing this.Garth Minette, maker, Snappy Rep-Rap

Why Ive decided to stop stressing about the future

Why I've decided to stop stressing about the future Why I've decided to stop stressing about the future I’m a chronic look-ahead-er. I’ve been that way for as long as I can remember.I’ve tried just about every trick in the book to try to focus on the present moment rather than hesitantly and anxiously looking ahead into the unknown. A wonderful former therapist told me that looking ahead causes anxiety and looking behind causes regret, so it’s important to work to stay in the present moment. This is a helpful, logical way of thinking, but the question remains for me - how do I do it?What I knowI know that  practicing meditation  even for just a few moments per day helps. And I know that  staying organized  and allowing myself to have a feeling of control helps, too. Exercise and its accompanying endorphins often loosen the tight grip of anxiety that I sometimes feel in my chest. And so do gentle reminders - my mom told me an analogy once that compared looking ahead to swimming - it’s important to focus only on each individual stroke rather than the ultimate end of the lap. How I get trappedMy anxiety du jour is that I once again find myself at the crossroads of a career transition. I wrote about it a few months back, but I will be finishing up a graduate degree in English in December. This degree is quite broad; I know I have the opportunity to apply my newly-acquired skills to many different areas. But with that comes the next question: where do I turn? What do I do? And then come the tailspin questions (often riddled with imposter syndrome): will I be able to find a job I love? Am I adding too many twists and turns to my career path? What if I’m not qualified enough? How will I pay the bills? What if I hate the new job? How will I know if it’s “right”?And once I’m in this mindset, no matter how many times work on my breathing or picture the swimmer, the anxiety grips me.A change of perspectiveThere’s a beautiful wooded trail near my house that I walk just about every day. I was recently  listening to a podcast  and was struck when the in terviewer asked the interviewee what they planned to do “next.” For some reason, that word lodged itself into my brain and stayed. I kept walking and it became a near-mantra that day. With the pace of my stride, I thought, “next, next, next, next …”This little word somehow sparked in me a shift in mindset. Instead of focusing so much on what I should do for the rest of my life and worrying about the broad, distant questions, I have continued to repeat the word “next” to myself: what do I want to do  next? What is the  next  best step for me? What  next  step will help keep me on the path that feels inherently right? What can I do  next  to help better myself? What I focus on nowInstead of what is forever…just, what is next? I’m almost 30 and realize that I am still pretty young- with many years of my career still ahead of me. Instead of finding the “be all, end all” path, maybe it’s okay that I continue on a more circuitous route. It can cause anxiety, sure, b ut maybe there’s some fun in not knowing what is to come. Maybe the trick is to move away from the perceived stability of “forever” and focus on the excitement - instead of the anxiety - of the unknown. Maybe the point is to look forward, but just a step or two ahead - toward the next. This article was originally posted on CareerContessa.com.

How the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes Members

How the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes Members How the United States Air Force (USAF) Promotes Members Enlisted promotions in the Air Force vary by job and depend on how many available slots there are in the next grade.  Promotions up to E-4 are automatic and are based on Time-in-Serve (TIS) and Time-in-Grade (TIG). However, for promotions to E-5 and above there must be an open position made available because a person retires, is promoted or otherwise leaves the slot vacant for a new promotion.  This means that for over-manned jobs, it can very hard to get promoted, while those in undermanned jobs may be promoted much faster than the service-wide average. How Air Force Promotions Differ The Air Force first determines the overall promotion rate across the whole of the Air Force for the promotion cycle by forecasting how many slots will be available. It then takes this rate and applies it to all of the jobs- referred to as  Air Force Specialty Codes  (AFSC)- almost equally (see below). Example of Promotion to Technical Sergeant (E-6) For example, lets say the Air Force determines that 20 percent of all eligible Staff Sergeants  (E-5)  will be promoted to the rank of Technical Sergeant (E-6) for the next promotion cycle. Each and every career field (job) will promote 20 percent of their eligible Staff Sergeants to Technical Sergeant, regardless of whether or not the job is over-manned or undermanned. Why Promotion Percentages Arent Quite Equal The percentages for each job dont come out evenly for two reasons: The Air Force rounds the numbers up for each job. For example, if the overall promotion rate for the cycle is 10 percent, and there are 100 people eligible in Job A, then 10 people will be promoted (10 percent). However, what if there were 113 people eligible? 10 percent of 113 is 11.3. You cant promote one-third of a person, so in this case, the Air Force would round it up and promote 12 people. That would result in a promotion rate in that job of 10.6 percent, instead of 10 percent. If there is only one person eligible for promotion in that AFSC, he or she would be promoted- assuming the commander recommends the person for promotion. Thus the promotion rate in that job would be 100 percent. Each year, the Air Force selects some critically manned career fields to receive an extra five percentage points for promotions. So, if the overall promotion rate is 20 percent, some critically manned  fields would be allowed to promote 25 percent of their eligible people. How the Air Force Selects People for Promotions When determining who gets promoted, the Air Force uses Weighted Airman Promotion System, or WAPS,  points. Quite simply, you add up the WAPS points and those members in a job with the most WAPS points are selected for promotion until the total percentage of promotions is met in that job.
